Mehndi: Art, Ritual, and a Little Bit of Magic

There’s something undeniably special about mehndi.

It’s not just body art. It’s not just tradition. It’s a ritual — one that’s soaked in centuries of culture, connection, and feminine power. It’s a moment of stillness in the chaos. A quiet spell woven into your skin. And for me, it’s been a part of my life for over 10 years.

Yes, a whole decade of stained fingertips, henna cones at all hours, and that intoxicating smell I will never get tired of.

So… why do we put on mehndi?

Traditionally, mehndi is worn during celebrations — think weddings, festivals like Diwali, and sacred rites of passage. It symbolizes good fortune, health, love, protection, and spiritual awakening. Brides wear it to bless their marriage. Families apply it to bond during joyous moments. And sometimes… we wear it just because it makes us feel divine.

Mehndi has always held a spiritual undertone — the cooling nature of henna is said to calm the nerves, its intricate patterns believed to guard against the evil eye, and the act of applying it is a ritual in itself. A time to slow down, be still, and allow beauty to blossom — literally — on your hands and feet.

What does it mean to me?

I’ve been doing mehndi for over 10 years — and honestly, it’s one of the few things that’s stuck with me through every phase of life.

What started as a casual hobby quickly became an obsession. Over time, it grew into something I truly love — not just for the art, but for what it brings out in people. Confidence. Excitement. That “wow, I actually feel gorgeous right now” kind of glow.

It’s also created some of the most meaningful bonding moments in my life. Mehndi became a way for me to connect with my family — sitting around together, laughing, chatting, and decorating each other’s hands before weddings, Diwali, and other celebrations. Some of my favourite memories are of those pre-event nights, everyone slightly giddy and smelling of henna. I even had the honour of doing bridal mehndi for two of my cousins on their wedding days — full designs, with all the pressure and all the love. It was emotional, honestly. To be trusted with something so personal and important meant the world to me, and it reminded me how mehndi isn’t just about the designs — it’s about the moment you’re creating while applying it.

For me, mehndi is equal parts creativity, connection, and chaos management. It’s the thing that slows me down, lets me focus, and gives me space to create something beautiful — one dot, line, and curve at a time.

It’s personal. Every design is different, and every client brings their own vibe. Some want something traditional. Some want something bold or unexpected. Some just want a little pattern on their hand because, honestly, they deserve to feel cute — and I fully support that!

I love the whole process — the smell of the henna, the feeling of the cone in my hand, the silence that comes when someone’s just watching their design come to life. And that moment when they look at it, smile, and say “I’m obsessed”? That never gets old.

Mehndi, for me, is creative therapy. A bit of self-expression. A dash of culture. And a whole lot of joy.
